c. 1890
Materials: Silver-plated brass
Produced in Germany by Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik (Wurtemberg Metalware Factory)
WMF was a prolific producer of decorative metalware between 1890-1910 and items produced during this period are considered iconic examples of Art Nouveau silver designs and tend to be sought after by collectors. While WMF is still active today, although now producing cutlery and cookware, it is most well known for this period of silver production in the late 19th and early 20th century up until WWI.
This compote pair (also sometimes called a tazza) is a more understated interpretation of Art Nouveau design, which would typically include motifs inspired by nature and an abundance of curves and details. The set is in quite excellent condition for its age; based on the maker’s mark it was produced between 1886-1903. It would have originally been used to display fruit or cakes on a dining table.
