Hôtel des Balances sits in the heart of Lucerne’s Old Town on the bank of the Reuss River. The hotel opened its doors in 1836, but the building it occupies dates back to the 12th century and among the uses it served over the centuries was as a town hall, guild hall, and inn. Mark Twain and his family stayed at the hotel in 1892. It continues to operate today.
